The Church

This project was inspired by some old architectural plans of a local church. I wanted to model it as a personal challenge, but also as a focal point for virtual time travelling in a game environment. I really enjoyed putting it into the landscape which is based on an old map from 1587. It is a more realistic version of my Ralph Treswell map environment.

The project was pretty big but it taught me so much.

The nature and background assets came from Polyhaven and Fab as well as from various courses I have done. The skills I gained from Rob Tuytel's modular environment course helped a lot for creating the environment around the church, so big thanks to Rob.

The gargoyles and grotesques were sculpted and retopologised before being textured procedurally. It was tricky to get reference images because they are so high up but I think it worked out ok.

The windows were the hardest part for me. I chose to keep the stained glass simple for this project because I am not sure how it would have looked originally. But it could easily be changed at a later date.

There were so many different windows!

I was very proud of these moments where I could match my model to the architectural illustrations.

The church as it is currently doesn't have a rooster, but Ralph Treswell's drawing seems to suggest the church had one, so I decided to add it.

The compass is based on the drawing from the original plan. I decided to model it and add a bit of animation, followed by a marauders map type of reveal.

A few progress images.

The church has unique materials, so I used texture painting for some parts and made my own seamless textures from scans for others. The lower exterior rubble wall was scanned, baked to low poly, and then I used texture painting to remove modern features.
